Great, Great, Great Uncle of Larry Johnson
Isaac V. Johnson was born on March 7, 1829 in Anderson County, Ky., the 7th of 8 brothers. Four of his brothers also fought in the War Between the States and one brother was killed in action during the Mexican War at Buena Vista, Mexico and is buried there. He came from a long line of patriots with his Grandfather fighting in the Revolutionary War and his father in the War of 1812.
His service records do not indicate the date he enlisted but he enlisted in Company H, 31st Virginia Volunteers. The earliest date available shows his promotion from 2nd Lieutenant to 1st Lieutenant on July 1st, 1861.
He appears on a list of wounded in Col. Edward Johnsonís Command at the battle of Allegheny Mountain, W. VA on December 31, 1861. He was shot in the right thigh.
In a letter dated, July 11, 1862, at a camp near Richmond, he resigned his commission because he was lame and unable to continue to keep up with his unit. His resignation was approved by his Captain and forwarded on to Brig. Gen. Jubal T. Early, who approved and forwarded on to Maj. Gen. Buell, who approved and forwarded on to Maj. Gen. Thomas J. Jackson.
He returned home to his wife Nancy and they had 4 daughters and 2 sons. He died in Nelson County, KY on May 9, 1896.
