Captain Nathan B. Barnes

Kinsman of Henry and Kiley Barnes

Nathan Barnes was born in Marion County Mississippi on April 21, 1822 and died in Covington County Mississippi on July 5, 1878.

He joined Stubbs Mississippi Cavalry early in the war and fought until the end.  He surrendered with General Taylor on May 4, 1865.  He and his son William, who served with him, were both sent to Ship Island.  Both were very ill at the time and Nathan signed his parole.  He and his son returned home.  He suffered from lung problems for the remainder of his life and died after contracting a cold while buying oranges for his family's Christmas.  The infection became more and more severe and he died as a result of it.
